Tracee Ellis Ross is a fashion plate. And since many women envy her retro glam, Boho chic personal style, it makes dollars and sense that JC Penney has partnered with the actress for a capsule collection.
“I was spit out by my mom so it [fashion] has been in my genes since I was a kid, and I worked in the fashion industry for years when I was growing up,” Ellis Ross told PeopleStyle about her new Tracee Ellis Ross for JCP collection. “I was a fashion editor and stylist. Then I moved into the acting world and my love of clothing never stopped. I’ve always dreamt of creating a line.”
The line includes 28 pieces that are all under $80, and was inspired by the Black-ish star’s own wardrobe — along with style inspiration from her mom and style maven, Diana Ross, as well as Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Nina Simone and a “little bit of Cher.”
“It is a collection but it’s more of a wardrobe,” she shared. “It’s all based around how I dress and how I pull myself together which has a lot to do with ease and comfort and feeling empowered and also joyful in my clothing. So there’s a lot of color and sparkle and joy and pattern in everything.”
So what are her favorite pieces? “It’s all pretty special,” she says, but adds that a tuxedo jacket — which she created for the line — should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.
In addition to that must-have tuxedo jacket, the Tracee Ellis Ross for JCP collectionincludes vibrant print dresses, disco diva sequin dresses and tops, luxe robe jackets and cozy polka dot pajamas will make women of all shapes and sizes look and feel fab.
In other news, while wearing an impeccable gray suit with wide-legged cuffed pants and a sheer black top, Ross recently gave an empowering speech for Glamour’s Women of the Year Summit, where she discussed how people routinely patronize her because at at age 45 she is not married and does not have kids.
“I’ve built a really incredible life, and I have become a woman that I am very proud to be. And then someone just walks up to you and is like, ‘You know, a friend of mine adopted at 52. It is never too late for your life to have meaning, sweetie!’ And my worth just gets diminished as I am reminded that I have failed on the marriage and the carriage counts.”
In her speech, Ross went on to reveal how her life choices took a certain kind of bravery, one that she encourages all women to harness. Watch her full speech, here.
