Black Twitter recently dragged Ray Lewis of the Ravens after he decided to take not one, but two knees before a game. The show of solidarity followed negative tweets made by the president aimed at the NFL’s recent #takeaknee movement. Lewis was one of Kaepernick’s most outspoken critics but apparently, he decided to hop on the bandwagon and link arms in protest. The former superstar seems to have angered people on both sides as a petition soon emerged to have his statue taken down from in front of the Raven’s stadium in Baltimore. The petition has since collected over 70,000 signatures.

That is the problem with fair weather activism, few to none will have your back when one decides to demonstrate because there is no apparent solidarity. Let’s be honest, was Ray’s gesture a protest at all? According to Lewis, he was praying, not protesting. In any case, his supporters see it as betrayal and the activists that have been down with the cause from day one won’t take the empty attempt seriously. Someone, please let Ray know that fighting the power is a full-time job, even for a retired pro-bowl star.
