Malcolm X Daughters Start Clothing Line In Honor Of Their Father’s Legacy

We need a hero in this climate of renewed racism and protest. And what better champion of the Black Lives Matter movement is there than Malcolm X?

Spike Lee’s Oscar-nominated biopic, Malcolm X, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.  And when it was released in November 1992, Lee’s “X” baseball caps, t-shirts and bomber jackets were must-have political fashion statements.  For these #getwoke times, the slain Black Nationalist leader’s daughters have launched their own Malcolm X clothing site.

The sisters, Qubilah Shabazz, Ilyasah Shabazz, Attallah Shabazz, Malikah Shabazz, Malaak Shabazz, and Gamilah Lumumba Shabazz have partnered with technology company Hingeto, to bring the apparel line to life.

Leandrew Robinson, co-founder and CEO of Hingeto, told Black Enterprise, “Honoring Malcolm X’s legacy via a clothing store is a dream and the most meaningful application of Hingeto’s system to date. We first met one of Malcolm’s daughters alongside Colin Kaepernick in a full-day meeting in New York.”

“It was clear Malcolm’s principles are as relevant today as ever. We all thought it was imperative to represent his message and today’s human rights movement as a brand that people can outfit themselves in daily,” said Robinson.

The Malcolm X Legacy line includes beanies and caps, athletic slippers, short and long-sleeved tees and sweatshirts. Prices range from $16.99 to $64.99.

Embattled NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is an early supporter, retweeting a message from the line and helping to get the message out.

@MalcolmXLegacy: “In this new era of global social activism, X Legacy introduces and online store to contribute to the collective struggle for Human Rights. MalcolmXLegacy.com features items that honor Malcolm’s achievements & revive principles of his legacy. The Legacy Lives! Be part of it!”

As outlined on the website, the collection will honor Malcolm X’s 12 principles:
