BET’s move to cancel Being Mary Jane has opened up actress Gabrielle Union for new opportunities. We may never know if 50 Cent was indeed responsible for the show getting cut by the network but one thing is for sure… the show must go on. In this case, BMJ will have a 2-hour finale to tie up any loose ends.
Not one to quit, it appears Union is moving on to a new project over at NBC. The Bad Boys 2 star is set to reprise her role as Syd Burnett in a TV spin-off of the beloved Jerry Bruckheimer franchise. For those that forgot, Deadline Hollywood
reminds us that, “Burnett is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and was romantically involved with Marcus’ partner, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith).” Does this mean cameos of Will and Martin? We sure hope so. Could this be a set up for Bad Boys 3? Only time will tell.
The plot of the pilot is supposedly something along the lines of, “Syd Burnett, last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, now is an LAPD detective and can pursue all the pleasures Los Angeles has to offer and leave her past behind. But things will get complicated when her new partner, Nancy McKenna, learns that Syd’s unapologetic lifestyle might be masking a greater personal secret.”
While audiences will have to wait to see Gabby on TV, they can pick up her recent memoir We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True. The book was published by Harper Collins Publishers last month. The New York Times Best Seller is available at all major book outlets.
