Strong Island [September 15th]
From filmmaker Yance Ford, “Strong Island” takes a look into the 1992 murder of William Ford by a white man and brings to light the deeply rooted racism within the justice system that led to Ford’s killer walking free.
Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown
James Brown was the hardest working man in show biz, and this documentary chronicles the legendary soul man’s career and the impact he had on music. The film features exclusive interviews with celebs and those who were close to the Godfather of Soul, as well as exclusive concert footage and photographs.
She’s Gotta Have It
To get prepped for Spike Lee’s series “She’s Gotta Have It,” watch the original film. The 1986 indie classic revolves around the sexually liberated and independent Nola Darling as she juggles three distinctly different lovers — playboy Greer Childs, square Jamie Overstreet and hustler Mars Blackmon (the iconic, “Please, baby, please, baby, please” character Lee portrayed in the film). The 10-episode Netflix series, premieres on Netflix on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23).
