5 Netflix Releases with Black Stars to Binge Watch This Weekend

Fall is the perfect time to cozy up in front of the television (or the viewing device of your choice) with a Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte and binge watch Netflix. Lucky for us, this month there’s plenty of black star power to check out on the streaming giant. Here are 5 movies and series to watch this weekend.

Strong Island [September 15th]

From filmmaker Yance Ford, “Strong Island” takes a look into the 1992 murder of William Ford by a white man and brings to light the deeply rooted racism within the justice system that led to Ford’s killer walking free.

Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown

James Brown was the hardest working man in show biz, and this documentary chronicles the legendary soul man’s career and the impact he had on music. The film features exclusive interviews with celebs and those who were close to the Godfather of Soul, as well as exclusive concert footage and photographs.

She’s Gotta Have It

To get prepped for Spike Lee’s series “She’s Gotta Have It,” watch the original film. The 1986 indie classic revolves around the sexually liberated and independent Nola Darling as she juggles three distinctly different lovers — playboy Greer Childs, square Jamie Overstreet and hustler Mars Blackmon (the iconic, “Please, baby, please, baby, please” character Lee portrayed in the film). The 10-episode Netflix series, premieres on Netflix on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23).

Shaquille O’Neal Presents: All Star Comedy Jam

The first installment of Shaq’s “All-Star Comedy Jam” standup series, hosted by Cedric The Entertainer, features funny men Kevin Hart, Tommy Davidson and more.

The Walking Dead: Season 7

Before Season 8 of “The Walking Dead” airs on AMC on Oct. 22nd, watch sword-wielding badass Michonne (Danai Gurira) kick major Zombie butt on the hit series’ seventh season.
